Yes, even being famous cannot protect woman from being humiliated and scarred. I’m writing about an established actress in the Malayalam film industry. Incidentally, there is news that there is a gang of such men who have been sexually abusing famous women. They film them in duress while being sexually exploited and then they threaten them and extort money. The actress in news, was the only one who bravely exposed them since she didn’t want to encourage them any further after what they did to her. There have been others who have been manipulated by these people in the past.
Funnily the news channels- print and broadcast have gone berserk over the news of the famous South Indian Actress being abducted and sexually assaulted in broad daylight. Sadly the actress, her picture and all that happened to her is all out in the newspaper. And I don’t think that this will help her or her family find any solace.
It is this disturbing news that brings me to think about the perpetrators, five of them identified. She knew them, since one of them was her driver. Scary isn’t it. Now we cant even trust the drivers, chauffeurs, top servants, delivery boys and I don’t know who else. I wonder, if this incident will also be examined and debated by people in the media like the Nirbhaya tragedy.
Here is a woman who is happy, positive, assertive and successful and this is something some people simply cannot handle. And in this case, they felt that by abusing her and recording it and threatening her with exposing the film would pressurise her to release money so that she wouldn’t want to be publicly shamed.
Even today perpetrators think that women are deterred by fear of law, fear of shaming themselves and their families. But I appreciate the courage of this lady to come out and shaming these criminals instead of falling in the trappings of fear and ostracisation from the society.

I admit that I wasn’t a great fan of animation as I thought it was meant only for kids. Yeah! I had my set notions as well. But then I saw Hanuman years ago in Theatre; what a spectacle and amazing All Indian creativity. I was impressed and moved.
So I decided that this time, I could dare again and watch another animation flick but this time with my Mom! Interestingly, the movie Brave explores the sensitive details of the Mother-Daughter relationship; stark co-incidence. The extent of love and emotional control they exude onto each other and the consequences of one’s immaturity and pride, etc. Brave deals with all the nitty grittiness of a parent-child equation.
Brave, treads in a light hearted manner, a serious and tough equation between a mother and her kids. Princess Merida is a rebel but without a cause. She wants freedom of choice in the way she wants to be and behave and also in finding her suitor. But her Mom ( Queen) and Father (king) have other plans. To the parents, their daughter is a part of political and military alliance strategy. However, the parents insist on good behaviour and decorum from Merida at all times. Especially the Queen. Needn’t say what happens next.
Princess Merida begins a journey from being a free- spirited girl to a responsible and matured young lady who finds a means to build the bridge that she burnt with her mom under the influence of her pride and learns to understand her mom & her own role as a princess.
Yes, Pride also a sin as per Christianity. Many wars have been fought due to this very trait of human nature. Lets examine Pride again. What is it exactly? An amplified EGO! But one thing is for certain that arrogance in a person’s attitude is an open display of the extent of pride that individual must be harboring within.
So cant it be controlled? Yes it can be. What needs to be controlled essentially is Ego. Ensure that it doesnt lead you to stretch it further to beome pride. Otherwise, the only way to get rid of pride from one’s system will be to actually fall flat on one’s face and suffer humiliation. That’ll certainly be enough suasion to the individual for introspection and retrospecting the actions that may have brought him/her to that state in life.
Ego once controlled can be worn as an ornament.Symbolically the snake on Lord Shiva’s neck does the same job.It still remains a fact that some acquire great realisation by going through intense trauma & adversity while some subject themselves to the devtional and detachment model to achieve absolution or enlightenment.
If one would notice our entire life’s course is dedicated whith this sole purpose of understanding ourselves to adapt and survive situations, circumstances and people. Mainly as we cannot control them but control the way we choose to behave and react to them. Thank god! for that atleast self control, self regulation and self-discipline is in our hands. Having said that both self-regulation & self-discipline are both very tough to achieve.
Coming back to the movie Brave, I had tears in my eyes when Princess Merida in the climax scene weeps in her mother’s bearish embrace and regrets her mistakes and apologises. While her mother is no longer angry with her despite the grave mistake that Merida had done; still she is proud of her daughter’s renewed sense of understanding and the efforts she put in place to set things right in order.
Yes, the finer things in life can be understood only when viewed from a different perspective. As these, perceptions influence our beliefs that impact our decisions & dictate the future course of actions & consequences.
Does it intrigue you that a place like heaven or hell exists somewhere? Probably in the deeper layers of planet earth, the underworld is where one could find the brimstones described in holy texts that describe the identity of hell. Then where is heaven, if hell is down, then heaven is the sky. The sky that we all adore when it’s nice and clear that spreads warmth through the sun rays that penetrate through it, everyday.
Heaven and hell are not literally places, that one can visit but it is actually, the state of mind, developed by our conscience and nurtured by the circumstances that surround us. The best way to experience heaven is to be with people who love you, genuinely. People who vow to protect you and feed you, raise you and even wipe your tears. Every person will develop their own perception of hell, again through various experiences. They could be incidents like a harrowing childhood with abusive parents, witnessing a riot, war or some ghastly act that one might have experienced or witnessed and survived to tell the tale to others. Yes, these are a few handful people who have survived the infernal intentions of certain violent creatures and they have experienced hell.
Parzania, talks about the existence of heaven and hell on earth, just as its caption suggests. In the beginning, the movie shows a society that lives together and is happy, even progressive and tolerant. Then from nowhere there are these sudden undercurrents of midnight surveys, flagging of shops with saffron colour, all after the Godhra carnage, a subtle indication of brewing violence. Pretty soon a curfew is declared. Men with swords dominate the streets, incinerating properties, men and women, violating women of all ages. The peace keepers and the guards, all of them shed their values, forget their duties and allow the genocide to happen.
The riots and the aftermath followed by the suffering of grieving people, all of them, innocents. Like the parents, in this movie, who lost their son, and have ever since remained in the limbo hoping that someday their lives would be the same as it used to be, once their son returns. Parzania, is a movie which has beautifully narrated the occurrence and the reason behind the riots. Clearly, an act to terminate the existence of the minority.
But the point at which it scores remains the fact that, it has shown the human struggle to survive amongst those, with whom they co-exist. The agony of loosing dear ones, getting agitated by the slightest provocation are some of the fears and pent up of emotions that would constitute the baggage with which every survivor would live with, in the coming years.
Riots are periodical events that continue to infect our society like a virus that cannot be eradicated as people still harbour the grudge in their minds that feeds this virus. It’s very easy to trigger violence, once these like minded people get together. So, is there a treatment for this virus? Yes there is! And it’s in our hearts and it arises from the fact that we still have the ability to care for our loved ones, and those we wouldn’t want them to be hurt. This same feeling is to be nurtured in our minds when it comes to individuals who belong to another family and another community.
Ultimately, we all feel the same emotions in different ways. So we could find different ways to co-exist rather than to butcher each other. There is no answer to an act that is committed in the name of god that ultimately puts the faith of the victims at stake. We must start questioning ourselves, have we really progressed? Are we any more tolerant than we were few centuries? Do our religions answer these two questions? Has our religion made us human enough to understand humanity and the value of a man’s life?
